Your son, your nephew, or simply someone you know might be enlisting soon. And you want to be THAT cool uncle that dishes out tips on getting through National Service easily. But then you realised that you ORDed way back and much has changed and you are unsure of what you know might be relevant to him. Well, fear not. Here are FOUR tips that you can tell share with anyone who’s enlisting soon that might probably look up to you for sharing with them: 1. Upsize your data We all know that in the past, camps were not allowed smartphones from being brought into camp. But however things have changed and many camps now allow not only smartphones, but camera phones as well. So what can you do with a smartphone? Lots of internet surfing. Time to upsize your mobile plan’s data cap so that you can spend those free minutes connecting with loved ones or just watching mindless YouTube videos. 2. Start working out (Picture taken from TODAY) Fitness is a very important part of national service. Pre enlistees that either did not take their IPPT or have failed them, gets another additional two months in camp. There are also other inconveniences that comes along like not getting a bonus “red-packet” from the Army and the most dreaded R.T, or remedial training, when the rest of his peers are using their free time in their bunks? So why not advise them to build up their fitness prior to enlistment? 3. Don’t be lazy Be yourself. I personally have seen many cases where people give poor excuses so that they can avoid doing something that they don’t want to do. Do not be that person who does that the rest would surely see through you and probably would be hated for the rest of your entire NS journey. Only by being selfless and helping one another will make your NS life much more fruitful. You also maintain genuine friendships that will last. 4. Look on the bright side Finally, their mental psyche is the one that ultimately decides on how they’re feeling. Along the way, something unexpected would happen like getting punished, relationship problems, and also conflicts within bunkmates. It is important that they maintain a healthy thinking and being positive. Let them know that every Singaporean citizen has to go through NS and sometimes, these things occur. Move on from it and by the time they know it, something happy will surely hit them like a truck! Don’t forget to share, like this post and tell us what any tips that we might have missed out!
